More EMTs: Eight members of the Vidalia Fire Department have successfully completed an EMT-Basic class and are now prepared to take the National Registry Exam to become EMTís. Once they are certified, the department will have a total of  14 certified EMTís. In the photo below Firefighter Walker participates in the EMT class.

EQUIPMENT DONATION:

The department now has all the equipment and certification needed to perform high angle and confined space rescues thanks to an anonymous donation to the department. The department has been utilizing the equipment to keep their training fresh.

TRAINING UPGRADES:

The department now has two certified Fire Service Instructor II personnel on staff. The Instructors are approved to teach through Louisiana State Universityís Fire And Emergency Training Institute. The benefit of this is that firefighters will receive training and certification through LSU accreditation. This will help to keep the citizens of Vidaliaís homeowners insurance at a lower rate while keeping the department rating of a 3 through the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana.

The department has also made changes to its training program in an effort to maintain the city's fire rating. One of the changes that the business owners of the City of Vidalia will notice is that the annual pre-incident planning done by the department will now be done twice a year versus once a year. In addition, the department will increase firefighter training, providing 240 hours of training per year. The department is also in the process of adopting a physical training program for firefighters.

The Vidalia Fire Department is currently holding a 14-week Fire Academy at the Vidalia

Fire Department Training Center. Once new hires complete the academy, they will be certified in the following areas:

Hazardous Materials Awareness Level

Hazardous Materials Operations Level

Firefighter I

Firefighter II

Pumper Driver Operator

Louisiana First Responder

The Fire Academy is being instructed by Captain Tim

Vanier, Training Officer. Shown are photos from this firefighter training.

ANOTHER CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR...

Matt Taunton has been certified as an Instructor I at F.E.T.I. at L.S.U, providing the department with four certified Fire Service Instructors. Having instructors on-staff provides substantial savings for the department in firefighting training costs.

EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENTS...

The Vidalia Fire Department also recently purchased, for pennies on the dollar, 31 new self contained breathing apparatus sets from Federal Surplus.

Firefighters are currently being trained with them before they go into service.
